– Wetlands for Human Well-being

The Lake 2024 – International Symposium “Wetlands for Human Well-being” organized by Energy and Wetlands Research Group, CES, Indian Institute of Science(IISc), Bangalore, and Alva’s Education Foundation was held at Alva’s College in Moodubidire from October 17th to 20th, 2024. Students from Vagdevi Vilas Institutions (VVI) had the opportunity to participate in this enriching event, showcasing their research through papers and posters. The symposium was a significant platform for students to engage with peers and experts in the field, fostering academic and personal growth.

The Chairman of Vagdevi Vials Institutions Shri K Harish in his keynote address, stressed the significance of student involvement in sustainable development, encouraging the younger generation to take an active role in protecting the environment. He also commented on the efforts of IISc for initiating this impactful conference.

Students presented their research papers/posters on various topics related to wetlands and their importance for human well-being. Technical sessions offered insights into current research trends, while panel discussions provided a forum for exchanging ideas and discussing challenges faced in conservation efforts. The diverse range of presentations highlighted the critical role wetlands play in sustaining ecosystems and supporting human life.

An exciting aspect of the symposium was the cultural program presented by the students of Alva’s College Moodubidire. The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony recognizing outstanding student achievements. VVI students excelled in various categories, demonstrating their dedication and knowledge of environmental science. Their efforts were rewarded with several accolades.

1st Prize: Deepika K & Vaishnavi Nagasrinika Tanuku for their project on “Water Analysis of Panathur Lake” (VVSM)

2nd Prize: Malhar Khadilkar for “Birds of Doddanekundi Lake” (VVSM)
3rd Prize: LK Vaibhav for “Impact of Urbanization in Bengaluru” (VVSV)

2nd Prize: Chiranthan Bhat for “Comparative Study of Bellandur and Munnekolala Lake” (VVSM)

Category: Std VI-VIII
3rd Prize: Sivamakin Selvakumar for “Impact of Urbanization on Lake Ecosystem” (VVSM)
On the final day of the symposium, students visited the historic 1000 Pillars Jain Temple, enriching their cultural experience and providing a deeper understanding of the region’s heritage. The concluding session of the symposium allowed students to reflect on their learning experiences and the importance of wetlands in preserving biodiversity and supporting communities.

Overall, the Lake 2024 International Symposium was a rich learning experience for VVI students. The event not only allowed them to showcase their research but also encouraged collaboration and networking with other aspiring scientists. The conference proved to be a valuable opportunity for personal and academic growth, inspiring students to continue exploring the vital intersection of environmental science and human well-being.
